Machame Route – 6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)

Begin your journey with a hike through lush rainforest. Expect a 5–7 hour trek. Overnight at Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,850m)

Climb out of the forest and into moorland with sweeping views. A 4–6 hour trek leads to Shira Camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m), then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This acclimatization day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Visit Lava Tower, then descend to the scenic Barranco Valley. 6–8 hours of trekking.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Climb the impressive Barranco Wall, then continue through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. 4–5 hours hiking.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

A short and steady hike brings you to the base camp for your summit attempt. Eat early and rest before your midnight push. 3–4 hours hiking.

Day 6: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Start at midnight and reach the summit at sunrise. Celebrate at the top, then descend all the way to Mweka Camp. 10–14 hours total hiking.
