Rongai Route – 6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,650m)

Start your trek from the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro through a forested path rich in wildlife. A 4–5 hour hike leads to Simba Camp on the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave (3,450m)

Ascend through moorland with views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields. This 5–6 hour hike brings you to Second Cave Camp for overnight.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

A shorter day of trekking through grassy slopes and rugged terrain. Expect a 3–4 hour hike with beautiful vistas. Overnight at Kikelewa Camp.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

Climb steeply to the base of Mawenzi Peak. The 4–5 hour hike rewards you with dramatic alpine scenery. Overnight beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo for a 4–5 hour hike to Kibo Hut, your base camp before summit night. Rest early for the midnight climb.

Day 6: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend all the way to Horombo Hut for rest. Expect 12–14 hours of hiking in total.
